Small Wastewater Treatment Facility Permit Application

Washakie County only issues permits for small wastewater facilities (septic tanks, single unit,
domestic sewage) of less than 2,000 gallons pursuant to a delegation agreement between the Wyoming
Department of Environmental Quality/Water Quality Division and Washakie County.  You must contact DEQ/WQD at 250 Lincoln Street, Lander, WY  82520 or call (307) 332-3144 for all other permits
issued by that agency.

Enclosed is a copy of the Washakie County application for a permit to construct, install, or
modify small wastewater facilities and the application packet from the WDEQ/WQD.  If your
application is approved, the Washakie County Planning Department will issue you a permit to construct
an on-site treatment system.

Please complete and submit (along with one (1) copy) the application form and the other forms
contained in the packet appropriate to your particular application.  A check in the full amount due for the
permit is required at the time you submit your application to the Planning Office.  Please see the
schedule on the back of this for the amount due.

There are a number of different options for leach field design.  Submit only the system detail
sheet(s) pertaining to the type of system you wish to build.  Designate a replacement area for the
disposal field on the plan sheet.  The replacement area must conform to the same requirements as
the primary system in the event of the failure of the primary system.

The percolation test procedures along with general instructions are included in this packet.  Be
sure that at least three (3) percolation tests are run in the area and at the depth the proposed leach field
will be located.
You must also determine the depth to the highest seasonal groundwater by digging to at
least eight (8) feet deep. High groundwater may not be present when the pit is excavated.  The planning
staff or the professional installer can interpret the test pit to estimate high groundwater.  The bottom of
the leach field gravel must be at least four (4) feet above the highest seasonal groundwater level
and four (4) feet above bedrock or impermeable soil.

The Planning Office encourages the use of professionals skilled at the installation of septic
systems.  You are also encouraged to contact the Planning Office with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,
Washakie County Planning Office
